the Heart of Tribal Laos
||Kayaking (Class 2), hiking, exploring tribal
villages and rainforests
The Nam Ha and Nam Tha rivers flow near the border with China and
through the homelands of three distinct ethnic groups of Northern
Laos. They also take us through the dense tropical forests and challenging
rapids of the Nam Ha National Park, home to tigers, wild elephants,
and an assortment of endangered wildlife. This is a kayaking and
hiking trip to discover exotic peoples and their relationship to
the land and rivers they inhabit, staying in their villages to see
their lives firsthand. We’ll spend one night in a guesthouse,
one night in a lodge, and five nights in village homes.
Fly from Vientiane to Luang Nam Tha. Explore Luang Nam Tha and
its markets, cycle through villages.
Paddle your own inflatable kayak through old growth forest.
Hike to a Khmu village for an overnight stay.
Hike the forest to find medicinal plants. Overnight in a Lanten village.
Paddle from the Nam Ha into the Nam Tha through more remote forests and
the fastest, most challenging rapids of the trip. Overnight in a village.
Kayak the Nam Tha to a village of fishermen to see how they fish and
try our hands at it. Overnight in a village.
Kayak to a regional market, then to a spirit cave, and
end in a Lao Loum village to talk with boatmen who ply the Nam Tha.
Ride a longboat down the Nam Tha and up the Mekong to Ban Huay Xai,
cross the river and drive to Chiang Rai to catch an evening flight to Bangkok.
