BRIEFLY
A two-day trip into rural rivers and canals that doesn’t involve
paddling, an activity-filled trip offers something for everyone.
ITINERARY
Day 1
We’ll ride one of Thailand’s oddest trains into a
countryside lush with palm trees and orchards, and threaded by
dozens of rivers and canals. We’ll pass saltflats and windmills,
visit a canalside town with its own floating market, a cat sanctuary
dedicated to preserving the last five of Thailand’s original
18 cat breeds, and a studio producing beautiful benjarong (five-color)
ceramics. After a canalside seafood BBQ, we take a nighttime boat
ride to see the area’s enchanting fireflies.
Day 2
In the cool air of the following morning, we’ll watch tappers
climb sugar palms, bringing down the sweet juices that will later
be boiled to create brown palm sugar. We then ride up the river
to enjoy a performance of the rare Nang Yai (giant—one-meter-tall—leather
shadow puppets), then cross the river to a temple with some of
Thailand’s most beautiful murals. After lunch at a venerable
Ratchaburi restaurant, we visit at a pottery factory producing
whimsical pieces, before returning to Bangkok by van in the late
afternoon.
