5 days to Mae Hong Sorn

Days: 5
Location: Thailand
Activities: Kayaking or rafting (Class 2), hiking, camping, village stays.

BRIEFLY
Mae Hong Sorn is arguably one of Thailand's most beautiful towns.  Tucked in a valley near the Burmese border, rich with Burmese temples and a lovely lake, it exudes an air of tranquility. Most visitors enter it by air.  We'll reach it by paddling a boat from the equally pretty town of Pai.

ITINERARY
Day 1
We can approach Pai via two routes, your choice.  One is to ride a van from Chiang Mai; the other is to fly from Chiang Mai to Mae Hong Sorn and ride a van to Pai.  Dinner in Pai and overnight in bungalow overlooking the town.

Day 2
Breakfast and drive to the put-in, upstream from Pai town.  Safety instruction, then paddle downstream through the hills.  After a picnic lunch, we paddle for another two hours to a Lahu or Lisu village.  We'll explore it and spend the night here in a homestay or a lodge.

Day 3
Paddle the upper Pai, have a picnic lunch, and then reach the outskirts of Pai to spend the night in tents, and enjoy dinner around a campfire, if the weather is cool enough.

Day 4
After breakfast, we drive to a new put-in at Muang Paeng.  Paddle downriver through a beautiful forest, pausing for lunch on the beach.  After an afternoon of paddling, we reach a jungle camp.  We'll use this as a base for a hike, and then spend the night here.

Day 5
We spend the morning and-after lunch-part of the afternoon paddling to the take-out just above Mae Hong Sorn, riding the last bit into town in a bahtbus.  This marks the end of the journey.  You can spend a few days in Mae Hong Sorn on your own or fly immediately back to Chiang Mai.
